Wine Decanter

The objective of allowing fine wine to pass through a wine decanter is to allow the wine to come into contact with air allowing it to oxidize thus allowing the fine wine to develop it's complexity. The broad base of a wine decanter allows the fine wine to be oxidized quickly when the fine wine is poured into the decanter.

Wines which need to pass through a wine decanter

Young red wines and fine wine that has been aged for years need to be decanted. Decanting young red wines helps to reduce the ‘bitterness' of the wine and allows it to have a richer flavor. Aged fine wine should be decanted for at least 4 hours. Decanting aged fine wine would remove the sediment that is often found in aged fine wine bottles and allow the wine to develop.

Procedure of decanting fine wine

1)After taking the fine wine bottle from your wine cellar or wine rack, allow the bottle to stand upright for at least 48 hours. The sediments present in aged fine wine would slowly settle to the bottom.

2) Three to four hours prior to serving the fine wine, pick up the bottle gently to prevent stirring up of the sediment and pour the fine wine into the wine decanter. Ensure that the fine wine touches the sides of the wine decanter to allow the fine wine to have the maximum exposure to air.

3)Serve the decanted fine wine in your wine glasses after a few hours and enjoy!
